The Weekend in Review: Labor Day 2009

Hailey enjoyed her first Labor Day weekend festivities.  Our Labor Day tradition is to spend the weekend with my parents out at The Ridge and see what kind of fun and mischief can be had.

Saturday morning I was about to head to Open Gym at CrossFit Cedar Park for my bi-weekly torture session, and my dad called to let us know that they had had an eventful night in the emergency room.  My mom woke up in the middle of the night with shoulder, chest and back pain, so after rushing to the hospital and ensuring she was not having a heart attack, she was found to have a pinched nerve in her spine.  So, I forewent the workout and we headed on out to The Ridge a bit earlier than we had planned.

Our niece, Isabelle turned five years old on Monday, so we had a birthday party for her.  With my mom literally on her back, we all pitched in to finish the details for the party including confetti cupcakes with strawberry icing, the cupcakes of every five year old girl’s dreams obviously.

The party started at the bowling alley and ended back at my parents house with pizza.  Isabelle had a great time with her friends and we all enjoyed watching the girls dance and sing and bowl.  Somewhere in between all of this, it decided to rain.  And rain it did.  They got almost 3 inches of rain within a few hours, and Central Texas has been in a drought for over 18 months, so any rain that comes from the sky results in immediate celebration!  Thank you Lord!

The rain also cooled the temperature a bit, so after the birthday festivities we went on a family hike (without mom & dad…).  This has become our most favorite of pastimes out at The Ridge, or at least Eric and Jango’s.  We always discover new things, such as 26 foot tall trees that need to be overhead squatted.

Hailey enjoyed her family hike in the baby bjorn….she just loves this thing!  It is the one place she is content to be for literally hours.

And here are Jango’s thoughts on the family hike…

It is definitely his favorite pastime.

Isabelle also taught Hailey how to rub noses, which was just precious.  Hailey thought it was lots of fun!

After a full day of family fun, we all crashed…until 1:30 am, and then Hailey decided that those darn teethies that we have been waiting on FOREVER were bothering her.  So we had a bit of a long night.

The next day, Hailey and Daddy woke up nice and refreshed…although Mommy did not.  So the entire family took to Hailey’s napping schedule and got two naps.

Sunday afternoon we did some driving around the area and looked at land.  It is absolutely gorgeous out in the Lost Pines of Texas.  Wow!

On Monday, we finished out the trip by earning our keep and helping take down some dead trees.  I don’t know the extent of your tree cutting experience, but to watch this crew of my dad, hubby and brother, Todd, it is quite a hilarious sport.  There is always much contemplation about the proper tools.  Then about the proper angle.  Then about how not to end up dead or nominated for the Darwin awards.  And there are typically some of us womenfolk standing to the side, giving our bit of commentary.  And then the tree looks like it going to fall.  And it moves a bit.  And the women are reminded to step aside and have a large tree to hid behind “just in case”.  And then it makes some noise, and all the men run like little girls.  And eventually, after multiple tools, attempts and failures, the tree gives in, and comes down.  Truly, it is quite hilarious.  If you have not had a good laugh lately, I recommend you go catch some tree cutting, at least the kind done by my family.

After all was said and done, we were exhausted and headed home.  Please note Eric checking out the camera to make sure he got his picture taken too…hehehe.

At this point, my mom is still laid up and in a lot of pain.  Please pray for wisdom for the doctors to correctly diagnose and treat her and for her pain to be alleviated quickly.  We appreciate it.

Hope y’all had a great Labor Day weekend too!

Praying for your mom. Back issues are painful. I know “flat on her back” is NOT her idea of a good time!

    Thanks for sharing!
