The Great Gardiner Paleo Experiment

We are about to get to it! After weeks of discussing the benefits, we have decided to start a Paleo diet experiment for six weeks. So, starting September 15 we will only be eating food that cavemen ate…which translates to no dairy, no grains, no refined sugars, no added salt. I know what you are thinking, what else is there to eat, right?  We will be eating meat, veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds. I plan on blogging about it just so you can all enjoy our pain.

The main reason that I am embarking on this experimental journey is to have a real understanding of what foods inflame my system. By taking out the excess and only eating the essentials for six weeks, I hope to gain a clear picture of what makes my body work, and what slows it down (and not that kind of slow down…).  As well as to reset our “healthy” eating schedule, it has gotten a little off kilter lately, especially with me being home all day with a pantry full of last year’s Christmas candy.  Just as a side note, last Christmas I was not allowed to eat candy due to the gestational diabetes thing, so I struggle now with feeling completely justified to finish off the marshmallow filled chocolate Santas that I had to deny myself of during a time when I was supposed to be able to eat as much of anything that I wanted without anyone caring.  And yes, we do still have some candy from Christmas.  Sorry, back to it.  At the end of the six weeks, I will be slowly reintroducing non-Paleo foods back into my system and see what things can stick around, what things can be skipped, and what things to beg the Lord to allow my body to better tolerate…or really what things to enjoy on special occasions.

I have actually been anxious to start for awhile now, but as the pending start date approaches, I find myself feeling a little angst about whether or not I am up for the challenge, and whether or not Eric and I will kill each other after the first three days without an insulin surge.  And I am a little overwhelmed at having to plan menus for 3 meals and 3 snacks a day.  That is a lot of planning!  And a lot of grocery shopping for fresh stuff.  We will see how it goes.  In the meantime, I am envisioning myself sitting in Starbucks sipping on another pumpkin spice latte busily putting together menus and grocery lists all next week.  Thank you very much.

Eric seems to be experiencing some angst as well.  He continues to cite from Scripture that Jesus called himself the Bread of Life and even pulled out the concordance and looked up how many references there are listed for bread.  I think this indeed will be a challenge for us!  So just be forewarned that in another week or so, this blog make take on a slightly darker tone.  Or greener one.  We will see.

    I’m glad you mentioned the pumpkin spice latte, because that was the very first thing I thought of for you. Um…hello. Perhaps this experiment should occur when they aren’t in season… 🙂

      I know…we do get a “cheat”, so mine is all going to be had at Starbucks…what timing!
