The Weekend in Review: Happy 4th of July!

We had a fabulous family weekend filled with lots of fun and trying to stay cool.  Eric had a four day weekend, so that extended our fun.

As usual, most fun starts once the chores are done, so Thursday we spent the day doing laundry, mowing the lawn, and other mundane tasks around the house.  On Friday, we headed out to The Ridge.  We packed up everyone, including Jango, and hit the road.  We settled into my parent’s house and immediately hit the pool.  On the way back to the house, Hailey fell asleep in daddy’s arms.  We laid her on the bed, and behold, she slept for another 20 minutes or so in her wet swimsuit…too cute!

While we were away, some of the campers and leaders were doing some film editing at my parent’s house.  They also found the homemade chocolate chip cookies I had brought out and devoured them…without asking…so we went cookie-less the rest of the weekend.  For those concerned, Eric did ok without the cookies, thanks to other camp food and Hershey’s bars.

After we got cleaned up, we headed out to the camp’s Friday night dinner.  This is the time the parents come back to camp, pick up their boys, eat some yummy bbq and then head home.  Hailey also had her first taste of watermelon (or of any food for that matter) while we were out there.  Those little teethies are still taking their time in coming, so a little cold watermelon rind was the perfect treat for her gums.  As you can see, she loved it, or she thinks she might love it.

Saturday morning, I got up and made fresh blueberry pancakes and breakfast tacos.  The pancakes were just heavenly!  Breakfast food is always so yummy!  I called my brother Todd to let him know we were having breakfast, and he showed up 6 minutes later, yes, 6 minutes…the guy who is late to everything finally found a reason to be on time.

Anyways, enough about the food.  We then returned to the pool, because really, what else do you want to do in 105+ degree heat?  We played some water volleyball (because my family has mad water volleyball skills, especially with a huge, 36 inch ball) and enjoyed splashing around with Hailey.  We also indulged in cold Gatorades, Snickers and Hershey’s bars (the latter being Eric’s fav).  Ahh, indulging on camp food, apparently that is the other thing you do in 105 degree heat.

After some sausage and ribs for a late lunch, we began the journey home.  There has still been little to no rain out there, so we also came home in a cloud of red dirt and with a mountain of laundry.  Amazing, especially for a two day trip.

This 4th of July, we are reminded of the many, many sacrifices that have been made and are being made for our freedom.  One of our dear friends heads overseas for another deployment on Sunday.  We continue to think and pray for him and his family as he leaves his wife and 2 daughters here for 6 months.  Now that we have a daughter of our own, I am keenly aware of how many moments he will miss with his sweet girls.  I am awestruck by his commitment to serving our country and his willingness to sacrifice on our behalf.  Thank you to the many, many who go and thank you to those who love them and let them go.  Happy (belated) 4th of July!
