The Weekend in Review: food & a few pics

It has been a super fun weekend at the Gardiner house!  My motto for the weekend was something like this…”paleo, smaleo” or maybe, “no junk food, yes, yummy gourmet junk food”…or something like that.  Anyways, here is the weekend in review in food and pictures…

road trip to The Ridge

road trip to The Ridge

On Friday, Hailey and I drove out to The Ridge (http://www.wildernessridge.com/) to visit Hailey’s cousins.  Grandma and Papa had them for the day, but needed a few extra hands with them as they had a very busy day at camp.  So Hailey and I started our road trip as every good road trip should start, at Starbucks.  I ordered my favorite summer latte in the Venti size.  I had planned to grab a donut on down the road, because I have been taking a strong stand against the new Starbucks pastry recipes.  You see, I love their cranberry orange scone, the one covered in icing, until they changed the recipe.  The new recipe has icing drizzled over the top in a few skinny lines…and that my friends, is not alright by me.  So I have been refusing to try the new one.  But in a moment of pure weakness, and a desire to get on the road to get Hailey to sleep rather than scream, I fell into the convenience trap and ordered the cranberry orange scone.  I tried to order a few other breakfast favs there, but they were all sold out.  So, I really had no choice other than to listen to my sweet baby, who hates sitting in the car, continue to wail or hurry and get her on the open road, so she could finally give up on the screaming, and fall asleep.  Thus, my stand lasted about 4 weeks.  And I must say, for anyone who, like me, was taking a stand against it, it is worth a try.  I did enjoy it.  They have added orange to the actual scone part of pastry and it may not be the old recipe, but I kinda liked it almost as well.  There was definitely a little less of a sugar rush too, which is not a bad change I guess.

An hour later, we arrived.  Hailey’s cousins, Biance and Isabelle, were very excited to have us there and love taking pictures with my iPhone, so we had to start the day off with a picture & send it to people via email.  They love this because they get to see it on Grandma’s computer too.  So here you go…yes, I am holding the phone and snapping the shot.

And off we went.  We walked into camp in the 100+ degree heat…and the feeding began.  First stop, the kitchen, for an icee pop (you know, the kind in the long plastic sleeve).  The heat basically required this bit of a treat…it was just so hot!  After visiting the animals and playing games, it was time for lunch.  I had a turkey sub sandwich, sun chips and an oatmeal raisin bar and peanut butter and jelly smeared all over my arms from the girls, but it was all yummy camp food.  Then, off to the pool, because there is not much else to do in the heat outdoors.  Here we all are and Hailey in her new lily pad.  She actually enjoyed it until the camera came out.

After our afternoon swim, it was time to head home.  Again, out of convenience/desperation to get Hailey to sleep quickly, I raided mom’s pantry and ate a granola bar and 4 Starburst sour chews on the way home.  We got home, and I started the Friday evening dinner routine…homemade pizza.  My pizza has green peppers, tomatoes, olives and pepperoni, so there was some veggies somewhere in the day.  And then Eric and I dove into the strawberry pie I made for his mom’s visit on Saturday, just to be sure the pie was worthy of eating, of course.

Eric’s mom drove in from Houston (where she was on business) on Saturday, so in preparation for another day of eating, I had a granola bar, and then some leftover pizza, and then 2 fun size Snickers (His mom took a little longer to get here then I had planned…).  When Mary Anne visits, we always have Mexican food!  I love it!  Apparently, Grayslake, IL is not the place for good Mexican food.  So we headed to Serrano’s.  I love to eat Mexican food with Mary Anne, because we share a love for queso and fresh tortillas.  And we did share quite a few together this round.  Then I ate a beef taco, 2 cheese enchiladas, and tons of tortillas and chips smothered in queso, guacamole and salsa.  Needless to say, this meal, which began at 3 pm, was my last meal for the day.  We even went to a fabulous Bon Voyage party for our dear friend Kelly and ate nothing…but had a great time with great friends.  Following the Mexican food, we vegged on the sofa and GranMaMa played with Hailey.

And then more strawberry pie and ice cream…

On Sunday, we had brunch at Chez Zee.  I have wanted to do this for so long!  And it did not disappoint!  Bring on the french toast, syrup, butter, eggs, bacon, croissants, strawberry butter…it was fabulous!

After a visit to Pottery Barn, and a Sunday afternoon nap, there was more strawberry pie.

And then, frozen vanilla custard with Snickers mixed in a chocolate dipped waffle cone, yes, I overdid this one a bit.

So, today we returned to our morning protein shakes!
