Port Aransas, Hurricane Rita, and our Grumpy Dog

It’s been too long since we had a real update, so we’ll try to catch up for the entire month of September.

We spent Labor Day weekend with Kim’s family and visited the Cameron Park zoo in Waco.  We had a great time with Bianca and Isabelle, enjoying the few animals that were out and about in their enclosures in the 100 degree heat.  We also celebrated Isabelle’s first birthday at Jeff and Nikki’s apartment on the Baylor campus. The following weekend, Kim and I ventured to Port Aransas to celebrate our 2nd anniversary (1 month late, but it fit our schedule and budget better).  We really enjoyed the four days we spent there, despite the fact that it rained pretty continually.  Even with the rain, we enjoyed several hours of swimming in the ocean, sunburns, and lots of good eating.

Last weekend we attended an adoption event for the German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue of North Texas and came home with another dog, Birdie, a female GSP, probably 3-4 years old.  Kim and I had talked about getting Jango a playmate for the last several weeks, and since there are so many rescue dogs needing homes, we wanted to adopt another GSP.  So we took Birdie home with high Birdie1hopes, looking forward to years of companionship with two dogs instead of one.  Unfortunately, Jango and Birdie had other plans.  We were careful about introducing them on Jango’s home turf, but from the get-go, Jango was very possessive of Kim and I, and he and Birdie scuffled a few times whenever we showed attention to Birdie.  Some of these scuffles escalated into full on dog fights, and after consulting with the great people at the GSP rescue, and with Birdie2_1much sadness, we had to return Birdie to her foster home in Austin.  We really enjoyed our 24 hours with Birdie, though, and she’ll make a great companion for someone.  She had a gift for frisbee catching, and I snapped a few shots attempting to showcase her vertical leap.  Maybe someday we’ll be able to take in another dog, but for now we’re sticking with just Jango, and we’ll continue to socialize him as we have opportunity to help him get over some of his grumpiness.  Even though Jango seems to prefer to be alone, we love him just the same, and every day with him brings us a loads of joy.  He’s a great dog!

Finally, we’ve rounded the turn on the craziness that swept over Central Texas as Hurricane Rita approached the gulf.  Earlier this week, at the behest of the news channels, we attempted some panic shopping of our own, only to be turned away due to lack of water, milk, etc and the local grocery stores.  Pretty scary stuff, even though there was really no major threat to the Austin area.  We quickly came to our senses, realized that our tap water would not kill us, and made plans to ride out any rain and wind we got in the comfort of our home.  All of the Leander area schools were out on Friday to make room for evacuees, so it’s been an interesting experience.  Our prayers are with those who are currently displaced from their homes due to hurricane damage.

And so ends this entry, as September winds down.  We’ll try for more frequent updates in October.
